Nine years in Alaska

On a personal note, today is some sort of an anniversary. I landed in Alaska for the first time nine years ago. Yeah, everybody comes to Alaska for one reason or the other, mine was a man, the man I met in Denmark and fell in love with. Here we are nine years later with a beautiful daughter, a wonderful house and a good life doing what we love to do. How quickly time passes by.

I’m celebrating my Alaskan anniversary in Hawaii with a cold drink by the pool. Mahalo.

Home office design

I love working from home and I like my space to be inspirational and fun. At first I thought I couldn’t possibly post a photo of my office (as it is this very minute)… but oh well, here it is without any censoring.

HOWEVER, if you want to check out some photo ready offices, take a look at Designer Daily’s beautiful collection 30 Enviously Cool Home Office Setups

I’m going to have to post another photo some time when my office is actually presentable ;-)

Local Artist Talk: Clark James Mishler

Clark James Mishler was the first photographer I worked with in Alaska, this was in 2001. I’ve since licensed numerous of his photographs and hired him for specific jobs, both through local advertising agencies and for my own clients. Clark has also taken countless, stunning images of my Alaskan family.

Over the past twenty-five years, Clark’s editorial photography has been published in numerous regional, national and international publications. In 2007 Clark published ANCHORAGE, LIFE AT THE EDGE OF THE FRONTIER, which was awarded first place for nonfiction by the Independent Publisher’s Association.

Currently Clark is working on a yearlong project named Portrait 365 – taking one portrait every day – all year.

A place to put your heart and soul

The Sketchbook Project: 2011

I signed up. I’m in. I’m getting an empty sketchbook to fill out. My finalized book will go on a tour around America with thousands of other sketchbooks and ultimately end up at the The Brooklyn Art Library.

Check out the The Sketchbook Project and participate with me. It should be a fun and creative challenge.

My Film Collection: Visual Acoustics

Shulman’s incredible photography brought modern architecture to the American mainstream, and by the 1960s he was the foremost sought after architectural photographer in the world.

This film provides a very warm and closeup look at Julius Shulman and his work; photographing modern architecture that remain revolutionary even today. He was a true master of creating a vantage point and often his pictures depict the buildings in a more beautiful way than you would see them in real life.

I love it and so should you. Watch the beautiful documentary Visual Acoustic – The Modernism of Julius Shulman. Narrated by Dustin Hoffman. Visit Arthouse Films for more good stuff.

What is Indigenous Design?

I’m so incredibly excited to learn about INDIGO, the International Indigenous Design Network. This is something that is close to my heart.

Designers in Alaska often do work for Alaska Native organizations and design collateral materials for target groups that very much include our indigenous population, so designers listen up, and to all of my artistic and creative Alaska Native friends, I hope you’re reading on because this stuff is exciting. When is Anchorage Design Week?

It’s not very often I refer to my Finnish heritage, but here we go. My mother was born and raised in Finland. She moved to Denmark when she was in her early twenties, and married my Danish father. I’m basically half Finnish and half Danish. That’s the short version.

Sharing here the website of the 6th annual Helsinki Design Week.

I wonder when Anchorage will be ready for a Design Week? We do have a lot in common with Helsinki, right? We’re on the same latitude, both cities are located on the coast, both cities want to be considered the greatest northern city in the world …and it’s freaking cold and beautiful during the winter, and even better in the summer. I’ve done it again

Since I first discovered Wallpaper* about 13 years ago when I lived in Denmark, I’ve been a subscriber on and off and at a minimum buy an issue every time I travel. So, here I am – a happy subscriber of Wallpaper* Magazine – again.

The magazine was launched in 1996 in London and quickly became a publishing phenomenon by talking directly to a globalized audience who shared common interests in design, art and fashion whether they lived in London, New York, Tokyo, Denmark or Alaska ;-) Continue reading
